In other words, are they better than air-tite holders. Are dasco coin albums safe to use for storing coins?

NO, air tight holder keep out the air out, so no contaminants in the air can hurt the coin. Of course the coins need to be handled with white cotton gloves when put in and must not already be contaminated. One can spend a fortune on protecting coins, but not all need super protection. Gold does well left alone. Silver tones but I tend to like the colors, most have problems with coppers. I collect large cents that are not mint state so an album is fine. I put a set of Indian head and Lincoln cents together. Most of the coins were mint state, I sold it all before something could go wrong. It depends on what the coins are and of course their value, as to what is the best and least expensive way of storage. The more you pay for protection the less coins you can buy. Keeping coins in a place where the temperature and humidity stay close the same all year is a real good thing. Most people have a place in their home they just need to find it. I don't mind toning for it is a natural thing, I protect more from damage than anything else.
Don't clean them, this will void them of any value. Believe it or not, old, dirty coins are worth a lot of money!
Also don't handle them a lot, the oils from your hands will get them more, for lack of a better word, "corroded". Put them in acid free protectors.
Now i know why they dont sell the Red Book $30-60 dollars for a 1970-d its worth like $15
